SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
Magazine
When Value King shut up shop a couple of years ago, this city heaved a collective and all too common sigh. It happened again! Swings and roundabouts we figure. So many great people with great concepts hopping on and then off the merry-go-round of great ideas. Much of the time, they get off the merry-go-round in Melbourne.
Format Zine & DIY Fair
It's noticeable that most of the people who've ended up working on Format over the past three years - Joel Catchlove, Ianto Ware, Sam Rodgers, Simon Loffer - have all been zine publishers. I think there's something inherent to working in a genre that has no pretence of quality or a career path. It teaches you to take the innocuous and irrelevant seriously.
Julie White
When I first met Julie White she was just about to graduate her degree in Fashion Design and it was already clear that her clothing was all about art. The centerpiece of Julie's graduating range was a black bodysuit that transformed its model into a flame of elegance and dark powers.
Speaking to her recently, she said its been a challenging year since completing study.
Format Zine Shop
Our rough n' ready West End streets can be real dangerous. This is no recent occurrence either. 150 years ago readers of the Adelaide Times were told that they should be "well armed with a life preserver or a good cudgel" when traversing the streets at night due to "strong gangs of thieves" that "carry on their villainies with impunity".
Mint Vintage
What more could a girl (or boy) want? Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Missoni, you name it Mint Vintage has got it. Priding themselves on stocking high quality, one-off pieces from world renowned couture designers, their eBay site and Facebook page is packed with loads of things which can break the bank, hey but who cares, it looks freaking cool.
Irving Baby
Irving Baby is a bit like the friend you made on the first day of high school. At the time, she was the coolest darn kid on the block and you were quite chuffed that she had chosen you, yes YOU, to be BFFs with.
But over the years other just as cool kids came along, she got a boyfriend, and you starting listening to far too much Joy Division.
Antique Market + Bookshop
Adelaide is a city of hidden secrets, and the Antique Market rates highly. Upstairs is - I kid you not - a toy museum. For a shop, this is bizarre: none of the toys are for sale.. Talk about back to the future. Then you go a little further back and find yourself in the vintage clothing section... bustiers, coats, shirts: from secondhand retro vintage to period, this is the place to come when you're setting up a play or opera, or having a fancy party.
