SHOP is your guide to boutique fashion and retail in Adelaide, featuring pop-up shops and other places that are so hard to find that Google doesn't even know about them yet. SHOP attempts to open your minds, hearts and wallets to the plethora of things that you can probably live without but in actuality don't want to. Clothes, jewellery, books, bikes, bags, shoes, bags that look like shoes - SHOP gives new meaning to the superficial - wait, we're confused.
I have a little theory. Go up the stairs that normally lead to Vego's. But turn right instead - you will be transported to Brooklyn, New York's second most populous borough. You will emerge in a clean, minimal record store where thoughtful young men are leaned up against a counter, nodding their heads to the beats being emitted from their Macbooks.
Boom boxes, records, palm trees on the walls, musty books and a "buns of steel" video? It's just what you would find at Any Street Stoop or Block. With fresh stock coming in every fortnight, it is worth cruising down to the beach, even in winter, to find some nice threads.
Specialising in retro and vintage pieces, the store has that '80s feel to it with shoulder pads, sparkles, big clip on earrings and bright colours adorning its racks.
You know when a shop opens and they name it something and you can't help thinking they sell things relating to the name of their shop? Newsflash! Just because Ivy League in Norwood is called Ivy League it doesn't mean they sell athletic attire. Here's the deal. Instead of Air Maxes, they have canvas shoes.
I haven't been to Porthole Records for a while 'cause I'm always broke. But I think I'm gonna get some money from writing this so maybe I'll go buy a couple records. Circle of life stuff. Porthole was closed for a long time last year, cause the meth lab next door exploded and lots of stock was destroyed.
What is it about miserable teenagers that makes me so darn happy? I see them standing there looking oh so bored and disinterested with everything and it always puts a smile on my face. I remember being like that once. Thinking that I was way better than anything I was being forced to do by society.
For high end labels (Elizabeth James, Dion Lee, Alex Wang, I'm talking to you) and lovers of all things couture, fashion nerds go to net-a-porter.com or thenewguard.com.au. For vintage threads, the fashion pack alternate between claireinc.com and ebay.com. Sneakers? Pickyourshoes.com. Jewellery? Melodyehsani.
When looking over Five Thousand's Google analytics a few shocking things stand out. Firstly, all of you freaks can't stop clicking on the keyboard cat link from 10 issues ago. Really, get over it. More importantly though, everyone in the world clicked on our 2009 link to Print Liberation- a tiny little Philadelphia based duo who's designs are pure genius.
