When I was growing up, indie rock was everywhere. You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a feedback drenched guitar solo, distorted, jangly guitars, and whiny vocals. Pavement was on MTV. Built To Spill were always touring. We slept on plaid flannel sheets and were all like, 'yeah, indie rock will always be around.
In their half-decade of existence, Sydney's Naked On The Vague have explored musical territories that are largely indefinable, but usually dark, industrial and fairly unsettling.
On Heaps Of Nothing, the former duo are joined by an unremitting rhythm section that propels their noise dirge into a realm of strange, decayed rock music.
Where their EP showcased an off-the-cuff looseness and a near-enough-is-good-enough attitude, Songs' self-titled debut album is a study in (relative) discipline, with thoroughly explored song structures and deftly crafted soundscapes.
These are songs that have been broken down and rebuilt numerous times.

FiveThousand is a subcultural guide to Adelaide, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Adelaide writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FiveThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
