There's a strange ramshackle formula to every Yo La Tengo record, a vow of consistency to the inconsistent. Kind of like that oddball friend you have who's liable to blow your mind and do anything at any time, but you just don't know when or where or how or why. And so the veteran group's twelfth album Popular Songs continues in that same vein, but it's a glorious rut to be stuck in.

This ain't the best Yo La Tengo record that's for sure. It goes through the motions and maybe lacks a touch of lively zest. But at the same time, if this is merely average Yo La Tengo, then it's testament to how fertile they really are. The insatiable pop beauty of 'More Stars Then There Are In Heaven' is alone enough to warrant the price of the album.

The unlikely rock stars from Hoboken, New Jersey are still as just perplexing as they ever where, and it's a fair bet to say they always will be. So if the result is receiving another decade of albums just like Popular Songs that seamlessly combine twee pop, college rock, noise, jazz and shoegaze, who could really complain?
