FiveThousand is a weekly snapshot of Adelaide's subculture - an Adelaide guide to film, music, design, books, art, goods and links for people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. Below you will find the latest additions to our Adelaide guide.
Queen/Elizabeth Street in Croydon is a bit of an oasis. I've never been there when it's not sunny. I've never been there when there haven't been kids riding their tricycles around. Everyone's always smiling. Dogs sit patiently on the footpath while their owners wander blissfully through shops. Couples walk hand in hand along the pavement, stopping every now and then to point things in the windows out to each other.
After three years, seven issues and a smorgasbord of contributions from writers near and far, illustrious and unknown, the Torpedo fiction quarterly has decided to call it a day. But with a name like that, don't expect it to go out with a whimper. Editor Chris Flynn has teamed up with the folks at Hunter Publishing, and now we have a Greatest Hits anthology in lovely paperback to send it off in style.
A bunch of unfeasibly attractive teenagers go bush. Laughing, flirting, frolicking beside creeks and campfires… Something bad’s definitely about to happen. Luckily, this isn’t yet another of those shitty horror flicks Australian filmmakers insist on continuing to make. This all-Aussie action blockbuster is based on John Marsden’s beloved young-adult novels set in an Australia invaded by an unspecified foreign power.
Personally, I choose not to shave. It's tedious, painful and makes me look like some kind of prepubescent bootlicker. Instead, I opt for a perpetual shadow of closely cropped growth. However, my sense of curiosity often outweighs my sense of better judgement, which is how I found myself being shaved by a girl.

FiveThousand is a subcultural guide to Adelaide, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Adelaide writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FiveThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
